Your Path to Wesley

Wesley College has a rich cultural life; including a choir, art exhibition and cultural weekend; and at various times during the year students present plays and perform in College concerts.

This Award aims to celebrate a well-rounded artist or performer who has demonstrated outstanding ability in their chosen cultural pursuit and someone who will provide leadership to cultural life at Wesley College.

Details:

The “Cultural Scholar-in-Residence” Award is open to students who:

• are current residents
• have proven ability and leadership in cultural affairs

The successful applicant will be required to contribute extensively to Wesley’s cultural life.

In 2024, the “Cultural Scholar-in-Residence” Award is to the value of $5,000 and is offered as a discount against Wesley College residential fees, with the hope of increasing the value and/or number of scholarships in the years ahead.

This scholarship honours the memory of former Master, Reverend Bertram Wyllie (1952-1964).

This scholarship will be awarded to a student who:

• displays fine academic potential
• would find it difficult to attend College or the University of Sydney, without financial assistance.

The scholarship will be to the value of $8,900 and is taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

This scholarship was a generous gift from Ms Cathy Bray, who was a resident at Wesley College from 1972 – 1974.

It was established in memory of her mother, Jessie Hope Bray (nee Paterson), who died when Cathy was 6 months old and her brothers were aged 4 – 16 years.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who has:

• suffered the death of a close friend or family member or has experienced emotional trauma, and
• who, but for the scholarship would be unable to attend Wesley College

The scholarship will be awarded by Cathy Bray and to the value of $8900, which will be taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

Established by Laurie Allen (Fr 1970) in memory of his father.

The Scholarship is to assist students who:

• Are in the second or later year of their course, including a Post Graduate Degree
• Have lived in a remote, regional or rural area of Australia before coming to University, and /or
• Are studying the German language (Desirable)

The successful applicant must also establish a financial need to hold the scholarship. This will be understood to mean that “but for the scholarship” the student would not be able to attend Wesley College.

The amount of the scholarship is to be $6000 per annum, and is taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

Wesley College Sporting Scholarships are offered in conjunction with the Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness Elite Athlete Program. These sporting scholarships will be offered to students of outstanding sporting ability to assist them pursue their academic and sporting careers. These Scholarships are taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

Wesley College is a member of the Sydney University’s Intercol Organisation. The nine male sports include: rowing, cricket, swimming, diving, athletics, rugby, tennis, soccer and basketball. The nine female sports are rowing, athletics, swimming, diving, tennis, netball, hockey, basketball and soccer.

Sport Scholarships are offered to athletes in a range of sports, including those outside the Intercollegiate competition. These scholarships will be awarded using the following criteria:

• Sporting performances and potential
• Personality and character
• Scholastic achievement
• Leadership
• Social awareness
• Community service.

It is a requirement that the holders of the scholarships would represent Wesley College in their respective sport(s) and the relevant Sydney University Sporting Club. Please note that students should apply for this scholarship directly through Sydney Uni Sports and Fitness.

This scholarship honours the memory of our fourth Master, Reverend Norman Webb (1965 - 1976).

This scholarship will be awarded to a student who:

• displays fine academic potential
• would find it difficult to attend College or the University of Sydney, without financial assistance.

The scholarship will be to the value of $8900 and is taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

This scholarship has been established by the Wesley College Foundation (WCF) through the generous support of Old Collegians and members of the Wesley College Foundation.

Details:

The scholarship will be awarded to:

• an Australian Indigenous student of the University of Sydney attending Wesley College
• if not for the scholarship, would be unable to attend Wesley College.

The scholarship is for up to the value of full Wesley College residential fees, and is to be taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

OR

as a living allowance for those students who have their fees paid by another grant or scholarship (e.g. ABSTUDY). Applicants should provide CentreLink confirmation of their eligibility to receive ABSTUDY.

This scholarship honours the memory of the Associate Professor Allan Bromley.

Associate Professor Bromley was a resident in Wesley College in 1964 and a member of the College Council until his death in 2002.

Associate Professor Bromley made provision in his Will for a bequest to the College, therefore this scholarship is offered as part of the Bromley Bequest.

Details:

This scholarship will be awarded to a student who:

• is entering Wesley College for the first time (a fresher)
• shows all-round potential in academic, sporting and cultural areas
• is the first member of their family to attend university
• if not for the scholarship could not afford to attend Wesley College.

The scholarship is to the value of $10,000, and will be taken as a discount against college residential fees.

This scholarship has been established through the generous gift of Professor Dennis A Ahlburg, a Wesley College resident from 1969-1972.

Professor Ahlburg attended Wollongong High School and the University of Sydney and is currently head of the Leeds Business School at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado.

Details:

This scholarship is open to students who:

• are studying in the Faculty of Economics and Business
• can establish a financial need to hold the scholarship. This means that if not for the scholarship the student would not be able to attend Wesley College.

The award is to the value of $5,000 per annum and will be reviewed each year. The award is taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

The Wesley College Indigenous Scholarships Endowment Fund was established in 2007 to provide financial assistance to Indigenous students to be resident at Wesley. Through welcoming Indigenous students to be part of the Wesley College community it is hoped to broaden the cultural diversity of the College and to assisting each Indigenous student to become a successful graduate from the University of Sydney.

Thanks to the generosity of Wesley College supporters, the Indigenous Endowment Fund will provide up to two scholarships per year, awarded at a range of between a half and full scholarship, depending on the individual situation of the scholarship applicant.

The Scholarship Committee will take in to account the individual financial circumstances of the student, other scholarships or financial assistance that they are receiving, and relevant government assistance, when awarding the scholarship and the value of the scholarship that is offered.

This scholarship is taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

Through the generosity of Old Collegian, Eric Landquist (fr 80), the Viking Grant, provides $10,000 to a student sturying Science or Engineering.

As part of the online scholarship application, students are asked to confirm their area of focus that is particularly interesting to them.  Students should also demonstrate financial need.

This Scholarship is taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees.

The Greg and Beverley Alt Foundation Scholarship was established in 2015 by old collegian Greg Alt and his wife Beverley to support students from rural or regional Australia to attend the University of Sydney.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student from rural or regional Australia requiring financial assistance. This will be understood to mean that “but for the scholarship” the student would not be able to attend Wesley College.

The scholarship is to the value of half College fees, offered for up to four years and taken as a discount against College fees.

Wesley College catering contractors, Chartwell, kindly donated two half scholarships (approx. $11,000) for students wishing to live at Wesley College.

The Chartwell Scholarship is awarded as part of the partnership between Wesley College and Chartwell, in recognition of the many achievements of our students and the need for so many to receive financial support in funding their tertiary education path. This scholarship is a half scholarship for residential fees, for one first year student and one returning student at Wesley.

The scholarship will be assessed on all-round high achievement and contribution to College life, including sporting, cultural and community service aspects. As with most of the Wesley Scholarship, the student would find it difficult to attend if not but for the scholarship.

This scholarship was established in 2001 through the generous gift of Dr David Greatorex, AO who was a resident of the College from 1953-54.

The scholarship is open to all students who are entering Wesley College for the first time. The holder of the award must show a general all round ability in the areas of academic, sporting and cultural ability and community service. The successful applicant must also establish a financial need to hold the scholarship. This will be understood to mean that “but for the scholarship” the student would not be able to attend Wesley College.

The award is to the value of $10,000 per annum for up to 4 years. The award is taken as a discount against Wesley College residential fees. The Scholarship will be awarded before the commencement of the academic year and will be reviewed annually depending on successful academic results.

This is scholarship is an accommodation partnership between Wesley College and the Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEF). The Wesley College–CEF Scholarship will provide $15,000 per year (for up to two years) to support CEF students relocating to Sydney to study. The Penny Pether Scholarship is awarded each year to a young woman who attended a state school in regional or remote Australia who can demonstrate financial need.

The Scholarship is awarded by the Pether family in memory of Penny Pether, a first year student at Wesley College in 1976. Penny was an accomplished lawyer, teacher and writer, and was much loved by her Wesley family.

The Penny Pether Scholarship is awarded as part of the Centenary Scholarship initiative by the Wesley College Foundation, and is given as a half residential fees scholarship, provided as a discount off College fees.

The Colvin Family Scholarship is a scholarship to the value of twelve thousand five hundred dollars ($12,500) for a first year student studying Medicine, Economics, Agriculture/Ag Science, Engineering, Arts or Law.

The scholarship is merit based, not means tested and is to be awarded to a high achieving all-rounder with strong leadership potential, where a Wesley College experience will help them unleash their full potential.

The student should preferably come from outside Sydney, from a regional or rural area. All first year students are eligible to apply for this scholarship and is offered in your first year only.

The Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded each year to a student who demonstrates exceptional academic achievement and a commitment to their field of study.

This scholarship is designed to support undergraduate students in their pursuit of higher education, helping to alleviate the financial burden of university fees and living expenses.

The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and financial need, and is given as a partial residential fees scholarship, provided as a discount off College fees.
