Wesley College offers a range of Scholarships for new students and continuing residents.  The majority of the Scholarships are means-tested and in great demand.  The Wesley College Foundation members including Old Collegians of the College raise money to support current students and we try to ensure that no student is ever turned away on financial grounds.

Please note that an application for residency must be lodged before scholarship applications will be considered.

All scholarships will be awarded before the commencement of the 2010 academic year.

Closing date for all scholarship applications is Monday 4 January 2010.

Assoc Professor Allan Bromley Scholarship

This Scholarship honours the memory of Associate Professor Allan Bromley a resident in Wesley College (fr 1963) and a member of the College Council until his death in 2002.  Associate Professor Bromley made provision in his will for a bequest to the College. This Scholarship is offered as part of the Bromley Bequest.

The Scholarship will be awarded to a student entering Wesley College for the first time who shows all-round potential in academic, sporting and cultural areas.  In order to honour the memory of Associate Professor Bromley, the recipient will also be the first member of their family to attend University. The student will be able to demonstrate financial need so that, but for the scholarship the recipient could not afford to attend Wesley College.

 The Scholarship will be awarded by Mrs Anne Bromley on the recommendation of the Master and Scholarships

Committee.

 

The Cultural Scholar-in-Residence Award

In 2008 one Wesley College “Cultural Scholar-in-Residence” Award to the value of $3,000 will be offered.

Wesley College has a rich cultural life.  The College has a choir, an annual art exhibition and cultural weekend and at various times during the year College students present plays and perform in College concerts.The College possesses two grand pianos, music practice facilities, a darkroom and a pipe organ in the Chapel.

The Award is for well rounded artists or performers who have demonstrated outstanding ability in theirchosen cultural pursuit and will provide leadership to the College cultural life.  The Award is open to current residents of the College and to any applicants who have proven ability and leadership in cultural affairs. The successful applicant will be required to contribute extensively to Wesley’s cultural life.

Applicants should submit a written application which demonstrates, in 1,000 words or less, both their own cultural ability (including providing references and reviews) and give their plans and vision for the cultural life of the College in 2008, and how they may pursue cultural and artistic excellence into the future. The Scholarships Committee will interview applicants prior to making their decision.

 

David Greatorex Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2001 through the generous gift of Professor David Greatorex, AO a resident of Wesley College from 1953-54.

The scholarship is open to all students who are entering Wesley College for the first time.  The holder of the

award must show a general all round ability in the areas of academic results, sporting and cultural ability and

community service.  The successful applicant must also establish a financial need to hold the scholarship. 

This will be understood to mean that “but for the scholarship” the student would not be able to attend Wesley College.

The award is to the value of $10,000 per annum for up to 4 years.  The award is taken as a discount from College fees. The Scholarship will be awarded before the commencement of the 2010 academic year and will be reviewed annually.

WCF Indigenous Scholarships

In 2005 Wesley College Foundation (WCF) established the Wesley Indigenous Scholarships through the generous support of Old Collegians and members of the Wesley College Foundation.

The Scholarship is to be awarded to an Australian Indigenous student of the University of Sydney who will be resident at Wesley College, and who, but for the scholarship, would be unable to attend Wesley College. The scholarship to the value of full Wesley College fees andis to be taken as payment of College fees         or

as a living allowance (to the value of half the College residential fees) for those students who have their fees paid by another grant or scholarship (e.g. ABSTUDY).

The scholarship will be awarded by the Wesley College Foundation on the recommendation of the Master and the Scholarships’ Committee and applicants will need to demonstrate financial need.

The John Lindsay Allen Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2009 with the generous donation of Mr Laurie Allen fr 1970. The scholarship is named in memory of his father, who grew up in Broome, W.A. and attended the University of Western Australia in Perth during the Great Depression. A scholarship of 50 pounds assisted him to become the only member of his family to gain a University qualification. His father was of English and German descent.

The scholarship is to the value of $4000 per annum and will be taken as a discount against College residential fees.

Jessie Hope Paterson Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2005 through the generous gift of Ms Cathy Bray, a resident of the College from 1972 - 1974 in memory of her mother Jessie Hope Bray (nee Paterson).

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who has suffered the death of a close friend or family member or has experienced emotional trauma, and who can demonstrate financial need. The scholarship is to the value of half College fees and is taken as a discount against College residential fees.

The scholarship will be awarded by Cathy Bray on the recommendation of the Master and the Scholarships’ Committee.

  

The Robson Bryant Scholarship

 This scholarship is for the best university entrance mark to the University of Sydney for an applicant who becomes a resident of Wesley College in 2010.  The value of the scholarship is $2,250 to be taken against the cost of College residential fees.  

No separate application for this Scholarship is required as the College receives notification of the UAI of all our applicants (as indicated on the application form).

 

Joint SU Sport and Wesley College Sporting Scholarships

In 2010 Wesley College Sporting Scholarships will be jointly offered by the College and Sydney University Sport. Male and Female sporting scholarships will be offered for students of outstanding sporting ability facing financial difficulty in pursuing their academic and sporting careers. 

The Sporting Scholarships are for all-round sportsmen and sportswomen who participate in a wide range of activities

in addition to their chosen sports.  The successful applicant must be interested in contributing to an exciting and rewarding college lifestyle. The scholarships will be awarded to those showing:Sporting performances and potential, personality and character, scholastic achievement, leadership, social awareness, community service, and financial need.

It is a requirement that the holders of the scholarships will represent Wesley College in their respective sport(s)

and the relevant Sydney University Sporting Club. A Sporting Scholarship will only be considered if the applicant has also applied for general admission to the College or is a current resident.  The applicant must be a full time student of the University of Sydney.

  

Joint Faculty of Economics and Business and Wesley College Foundation Indigenous Scholarship

 In 2010 the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney will offer an Indigenous Australian Scholarship in partnership with the Wesley College Foundation (WCF) to support a student studying in the Facultyand residing at Wesley College.

1.   The scholarship is to be awarded in 2010 for up to 4 years, to an Australian Indigenous student who will be enrolled in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney and who will be resident at Wesley College and who has financial disadvantage and demonstrates a potential to succeed in an area of study taught within the Faculty of Economics and Business.

2.   The scholarship will be for full payment of College Fees which includes accommodation and meals and is paid directly to the College on the student's behalf. Alternatively, for those students who have their fees paid by another grant or scholarship (e.g. ABSTUDY) the scholarship will be taken as a $6,000 grant from the Faculty of Economics and Business towards living expenses (if taken as a grant, a payment of $3,000 will be made at the start of each semester)

3.   To continue to receive the scholarship, the recipient must be enrolled full-time and maintain satisfactory academic progress

4.    The scholarship will be awarded by the Faculty of Economics and Business and Wesley College Foundation in consultation with the Koori Centre at Sydney University   www.koori.usyd.edu.au

5.    As this scholarship is specifically for Indigenous Australians, applicants are also required to provide confirmation that they are of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. This confirmation can be in the form of a letter of identity from your local Land Council, Legal Service, Medical Service, or other official Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation, or a Statutory Declaration. The Koori centre also has applicants complete a ‘Proof of identity’ check (to establish Indigenous descent).

Joint Wesley College & University of Sydney Vietnam Award

This is a joint Award given in conjunction with the University of Sydney’s International Office and Wesley College.

Since 1992 Wesley College, has sponsored an Overseas Study Program to Vietnam.   Each year, six Wesley students go to Vietnam to work with universities and in other course related work placements and to engage in volunteering work in Vietnam. This award has become an important part of the College’s Overseas Study Program. Both the College and the University are strongly committed to further developing its significant relationship with Vietnam and with the large Vietnamese community in Sydney.

The recipient of the Vietnam Award will be a Vietnamese national who is currently a student of the University of Sydney or is at the University of Sydney as a visiting academic during the academic year 2010.  The successful applicant willexhibit both academic merit and an ability to contribute to the community life of Wesley College and will help with the College’s Overseas Study Program to Vietnam.

The award provides for half College fees for an academic year. College fees cover accommodation and food costs (3 meals a day) for up to 47 weeks. The award will be received as a discount on College fees.

The Reverend Norman Webb Scholarship

This scholarship honours the memory of the fourth Master of the College, Rev. Norman Webb.

The Webb Scholarship is given to assist a student with fine academic potential who, for financial reasons, would find it difficult to attend College or the University, without financial assistance. In 2010 the scholarship will be to the value of half the College fees and is paid against the cost of College fees.

 

The Reverend Bertram Wyllie Scholarship

This scholarship honours the memory of the third Master of the College, Rev. Bert Wyllie. 

The Wyllie Scholarship is given to assist a student with fine academic potential who, for financial reasons, would find it difficult to attend College or the University without financial assistance. In 2010 the scholarship will be to the value of half the College fees and is paid against the cost of College fees.

  

Dennis A Ahlburg Scholarship

This scholarship has been established through the generous gift of Professor Dennis A Ahlburg, a resident of the College from 1969-1972. Professor Ahlburg attended Wollongong High School and University of Sydney and is currently head of the Leeds Business School at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado.

The scholarship is open to students who are entering Wesley College.

The award is to the value of $4,000 per annum and will be reviewed each year.  The award is taken as a discount off

College fees.  

 

Frank Simpson Residential Scholarship  (Not available in 2010)

This scholarship has been established through the generous gift of Mr Frank Simpson a resident of the College from 1939-42.

Frank attended Newcastle Boys’ High School and was awarded 3 scholarships to study at the University of Sydney and to reside at Wesley College. Mr Simpson wanted to support students who wish to study Medicine, particularly those prepared to practice in country and regional centres where the need is greatest.

The scholarship is open to students who are enrolled in the MBBS graduate-entry medical degree at the University of Sydney, The successful applicant must also establish a financial need to hold the scholarship.  This will be understood to mean that “but for the scholarship” the student would not be able to attend Wesley College. Preference will be given to applicants holding a Bonded Medical Place at Sydney University, however others enrolled in the MBBS graduate-entry course who have a commitment to rural practice, may apply.

The Scholarship is to the value of full residential fees for a student, and the award is taken as a discount against College residential fees.  The Scholarship will be awarded for up to two years and will be reviewed annually.Click here to download application. 

 

The Edwin Hocking Remote Scholarship

This Scholarship has been established through the generous gift of Matthew Hocking, a resident of the College from 2005-2007. Mattthew has been motivated by the fact that he received financial assistance to attend Wesley for the 3 years and he places great value on this experience.

The recipient of this scholarship is intended to be a student who would not normally be able to afford residence at College. He/she will be a student from a remote/rural area of Australia and who has attended a public High School. This award is to the value of $3000 per annum and will be taken as a discount against College Fees.

 

The Indigenous Scholarships Endowment Fund

In 2007 the Foundation gratefully accepted Greg Alt’s (fr 1964) offer to lead an Endowment Appeal for Indigenous Scholarships in order to ensure the sustainability of the Wesley Indigenous Scholarships program (established in 2005) and to support an increase in the number of Indigenous graduates from the University of Sydney.
In 2009 a Scholarship of $6,000 was offered. It will be offered in 2010 depending on the continuation of the student and subject to funds being available.

 

The Linden Edwards Scholarship

A scholarship established by Ms Deborah Edwards fr 1976 and the Edwards family in memory of her sister Linden Edwards (fr 1974) who was an Old Collegian and College Councillor. The scholarship of a minimum $5000 a year is awarded preferably to a student from a country area. This year with the support of friends this scholarship was increased to $6000.
