Message from Patrick Cunningham (fr 1986) - Wesley XI in the Final for Rawson Cricket Wed 19th March
Wesley XI after wins against St Pauls and St Johns are in the final v St Pauls competing for the Inter Collegiate cricket cup with the game to be held on Syd Uni No 1 Oval this Wednesday 19th March, 2008 starting at 10am.
According to co-captain Ewan Rankin, Wesley 3rd year, “The side this year is well rounded for batting and bowling skills and while 2/3rds of the team are Freshers they are keenly focused and serious in their performance to win the cup”. Last Tuesday 11th March Wesley took on St Andrews upon the lush green field of St Pauls oval. Wesley batted first and tallied up what on normal occasions would be a comfortable winning score of 256, with notable knocks from Nolan Matthews 67 and Nick Larkin, from Taree, 75. Certainly St Andrews showed they were not giving up without a contest and with two overs to go were eight for 232. Wesley were reduced to two part time bowlers and spectators on both sides knew this game was up for grabs with scores of ten plus an over entirely possible. Wesley bowlers focused their concentration and fresher Nick Larkin, (who has a brother at St Andrews who scored 117) took 2 wickets in the last over to finish with four wickets and St Andrews were all out for 244 with 2 balls to go.
St Johns who scored 160 against St Pauls were not blessed with luck on the day with their best bat run out by a fresher at the other end. St Johns were unable to withstand the Wesley bowling onslaught and were all out for 33. Wesley 4th year and other co-captain of the Wesley XI Lachlan ‘Fezbo’ Dews , of Parrearra Qld, took 4 for 9 ably supported by Wesley fresher David Miller from Old Bar, with 4 for 14. Wesley won with 1 wicket for 34 in 5.2 overs with the match taking less than 2 hours.
St Pauls are the reigning champions and have, as always, a balanced side with a notable slugger of the willow. This year St Pauls are led in this department by Mitch Cook, a 1st grade uni batsmen and with uni coming off a solid season and charging into the first grade semi finals a seasoned campaigner on No 1. Wesley will be up to the challenge with uni cricket club representatives Dave Miller and Nick Larkin while fresher leg spinner Ryan Bulger, who plays for Manly 1st grade will relish the opportunity of following the successful footsteps of Greg Matthews and Stuart MacGill as he approaches with Wesley cheering on from the Grandstand end of No 1 oval.
Cricket Final: Wesley v St Pauls No 1 Oval Wed 19th March 2008 from 10am . Wesley Old Cols welcome
